Kassa Overall
Kassa Overall est un musicien nommé aux Grammy Awards, MC, chanteur, producteur et batteur, qui mêle l’expérimentation avant-gardiste aux techniques de production hip-hop afin de déplacer le point de rencontre entre le jazz et le rap vers des territoires encore inexplorés.
Sur ses deux premiers albums studio, GO GET ICE CREAM AND LISTEN TO JAZZ et I THINK I’M GOOD, Kassa superpose une batterie virtuose, des techniques de production d’une grande précision et une écriture incisive pour s’imposer comme un innovateur rythmique et un poète visionnaire. Il y utilise sa voix pour dénoncer les injustices du système carcéral, de l’industrie pharmaceutique et du racisme anti-noir, tout en affrontant les périls liés à sa propre maladie mentale. Avec ANIMALS, son premier album sur le label Warp Records, Kassa pousse encore plus loin sa vision kaléidoscopique et subversive. Il y superpose des boîtes à rythmes Roland 808 à une batterie avant-gardiste dans la lignée de ses mentors Elvin Jones et Billy Hart, ce dernier auprès de qui il a étudié au Conservatoire de musique d’Oberlin. Des instrumentistes virtuoses y côtoient des poètes du rap, parmi lesquels Danny Brown, Wiki, Lil B et Shabazz Palaces. Une improvisation jazz de très haut niveau s’entrelace avec des arrangements orchestraux pour cordes signés Jherek Bischoff. La distribution éclectique et prestigieuse de collaborateurs de l’album comprend également plusieurs de ses proches amis, comme les chanteurs Nick Hakim, Laura Mvula et Francis and the Lights, ainsi que des figures majeures du jazz telles que Theo Croker et Vijay Iyer.
ANIMALS prolonge aussi le message de Kassa : son titre agit comme une métaphore chargée des paradoxes de sa vie d’artiste et d’homme noir aux États-Unis. ANIMALS est le son d’un artiste conscient du prix à payer lorsqu’on incarne son moi le plus naturel sous le regard du public, une profonde confrontation avec cette vérité à double tranchant : mettre sa liberté en scène pour un public peut aussi signifier céder à une existence derrière les barreaux.

On his first two studio albums GO GET ICE CREAM AND LISTEN TO JAZZ and I THINK I’M GOOD, Kassa layered virtuosic drumming, meticulous production techniques, and incisive lyricism to establish himself as a rhythmic innovator and visionary poet, using his voice to address the injustices of the carceral system, the pharmaceutical industry, and anti-black racism, while wrangling with the perils of his own mental illness. On ANIMALS, his Warp Records debut, Kassa pushes his kaleidoscopic, subversive vision further. He layers Roland 808s against avant-garde drumming in the vein of his mentors Elvin Jones and Billy Hart, the latter of whom he studied with at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Virtuoso musos appear alongside rap poets, including Danny Brown, Wiki, Lil B, and Shabazz Palaces. Top-flight jazz improvisation weaves in and out of orchestral string arrangements by Jherek Bischoff. The album’s diverse, all-star roster of collaborators includes several of his close friends, like vocalists Nick Hakim, Laura Mvula, Francis and the Lights, and jazz stars like Theo Croker and Vijay Iyer.
ANIMALS pushes Kassa’s message further too, the title a loaded metaphor for the paradoxes of his life as an entertainer and as a black man in America. ANIMALS is the sound of an artist aware of the cost of embodying one’s natural self in the public eye, a deep reckoning with the two-sided truth that to perform one’s freedom for an audience can mean succumbing to life inside a cage.
