Kamaal Williams is the latest project led by prolific south London based artist Henry Wu.
As the mastermind behind Yussef Kamaal, Wu released a landmark album for British jazz with 2016’s Black Focus. This latest collective continues the tradition of fusing jazz with the streets sounds of London, resulting in a live show that captures a truly raw energy for which Wu has become known.
With shows at Glastonbury and Koko, as well as worldwide festival appearances behind them, Kamaal Williams have already become an in-demand outfit in their own right.
For 2019, the ensemble features a rotating repertoire of premiership musicians, including fellow Londoners Nathaniel ‘Tonez’ Fuller (drums), Duane ‘Hurcs’ Atherley (bass) as well as members of the LA based Katalyst collective.
Kamaal Williams’ album, The Return, is the debut release on Black Focus Records, a new musical outlet for Wu’s community of friends and collaborators who currently have the world’s attention locked onto the capital. Releases from London’s underground movement are set to follow in 2019.
