John Talabot
John Talabot occupe une position assez unique dans le paysage électronique actuel. Un espace qu’il s’est taillé en restant fidèle à une vision artistique large dans son champ d’action et précise dans ses convictions. Son approche ouverte d’esprit pour créer, collectionner et jouer de la musique lui permet d’être aussi à l’aise sur la scène principale d’un grand festival d’été que dans un petit club local, en convainquant autant les gens de passage que les plus fins connaisseurs.
Aujourd’hui, il ne cesse de repousser les limites, suivant ses instincts plutôt que des stratagèmes. Pour ce faire, il privilégie un dialogue continu avec des artistes partageant les mêmes idées. Son alliance avec Axel Boman (via leur duo Talaboman) a donné naissance à un nouveau label et son duo Lost Scripts avec Pional continue de faire des étincelles, mais ce ne sont que deux des nombreux projets communs qu’il a actuellement en cours. Certains pourraient être annoncés bientôt, d’autres pourraient ne jamais voir le jour, mais le plus important : ils font circuler les idées. Un besoin de découverte qui définit aussi sa recherche inlassable de la musique, faisant de lui l’un de ces rares DJ qui savent sans effort juxtaposer efficacité, risque et révélation. Ses sets en all night long sont difficiles à oublier, avec des exemples notables dans des lieux et des festivals tels que Sónar, Pickle Factory, Moog ou la Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum à Glasgow. En plus de jouer sur scène, son travail de curation ne cesse de se développer, ayant programmé des scènes dans des festivals tels que Primavera Sound ou Nuits Sonores, ou faisant circuler les soirées de son label Hivern Discs dans des clubs à travers l’Europe.

John Talabot occupies a fairly unique position in the current electronic landscape. A space he has carved himself by staying true to an artistic vision that is broad in its scope and specific in its convictions. His open minded approach to making, collecting and playing music allows him to be just as comfortable on the main stage of a great summer festival as in a small local club, earning the following of both the occasional fan and the demanding connoisseur along the way.
Today, he keeps pushing the envelope, following instincts rather than stratagems. To do so he favours a continuous dialogue with like-minded artists. His alliance with Axel Boman in Talaboman has just birthed a new label and his Lost Scripts duo with Pional keeps delivering sparkles of brilliance, but those are just two of the several joint projects he currently has in play. Some might be announced soon, some might never see the light of day, but most important: they keep ideas flowing. A need of discovery that also defines his tireless search of music, making him one of those rare DJs that can effortlessly juxtapose efficacy, risk and revelation. His allnighter sets are hard to forget, with notable examples in venues and festivals such as Sónar, Pickle Factory, Moog or the Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum in Glasgow. Moreover playing music, his curational endeavours keep expanding, having commissioned stages in festivals such as Primavera Sound or Nuits Sonores or bringing his Hivern Discs label’s nights to clubs around Europe.
In many ways, his work with the label epitomises his understanding of music: rigorous and committed, but constantly dynamic and open to the unexpected. Because if John Talabot has made something clear over the last decade, is that growth always comes from the will to keep exploring. Having just joined an agency like futura, with which it shares so many affinities, can only mean that new paths are ready to be crossed.
