CAKE s’est construit dès ses débuts dans une farouche indépendance, née en partie d’une réaction à contre-courant du grunge. Le groupe a peu à peu façonné un son unique, à la croisée des genres, sans équivalent ni par son ton ni par son regard. Leur dernier album, Showroom of Compassion, s’est hissé directement à la première place du Billboard Top 200 aux États-Unis et a été salué par The New Yorker comme une œuvre d’une « brillante impassibilité ».
Actuellement en studio pour préparer leur neuvième album, attendu à l’automne 2026, CAKE poursuit son exploration d’un commentaire culturel acéré à travers une écriture toujours inventive. Le groupe a récemment dévoilé un nouveau titre, « Hold You (Responsible) », inclus dans la compilation Songs for Sex — une réponse artistique au Project 2025, ainsi qu’un soutien affirmé à la liberté reproductive et au respect de la vie privée. Ils ont également présenté une autre chanson inédite, « Billionaire in Space », lors d’une session Live From the Freight Elevator avec Texas Public Radio aux États-Unis. Son chanteur John McCrea la décrit comme « une observation du déséquilibre économique et du sentiment d’être laissé pour compte ». Ces deux titres figureront sur le prochain album.

CAKE: Defiantly self-reliant since their early days as a somewhat antagonistic response to grunge, CAKE has built a singular, genre-blending sound with no clear peers in tone or perspective. Their last album, Showroom of Compassion, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 in the U.S. and was praised as “deadpan brilliance” by « The New Yorker.”
Currently at work on their ninth studio album—due autumn 2026—CAKE continues to explore sharp cultural commentary through inventive songwriting. The band recently released a new track, “Hold You (Responsible),” on the « Songs for Sex » compilation, an artist driven response to Project 2025 as well as support for reproductive freedom and personal privacy. They also premiered a new song, “Billionaire in Space,” during a “Live From the Freight Elevator” session with Texas Public Radio in the U.S. Lead vocalist John McCrea describes it as “an observation of economic imbalance and being left behind.” Both tracks will appear on the upcoming album.
